China warned by U.S. over its pressure on Taiwan U.S. has warned China over its pressure on Taiwan, the State Department said Saturday as the two powers gird for a hotly awaited summit.
The virtual meeting of presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping comes against a backdrop of rising tensions in part over Taiwan, a self-ruling democracy claimed by Beijing, but also over trade, human rights and other issues.
Tensions between the world’s two largest economies, especially Taiwan, have risen significantly recently. The government in Beijing sees the island as a separate province and, if necessary, should be reunited with the mainland by military force. The United States recently staged a protest against the government in Taipei.
Last month, the European Parliament decided to deepen economic and diplomatic relations with Taiwan. A report that addressed the importance of economic ties between the European Union and Taiwan also raised concerns over China’s use of its military to pressure Taiwan.
