Bolton organisations offer reassurance amid spiking concerns

BARS and police have offered reassurance, following growing concerns around drink spiking in Bolton.

The Venue, in Churchgate was the first bar to introduce the ‘Ask For Angela’ initiative, offering a discreet service for anyone feeling unsafe, threatened, or vulnerable.

Since the issue was highlighted, they have ensured staff have been briefed on NHS guidelines on the effects of drinks being spiked, including displaying some new posters.

But reports of hundreds of drinks being spiked and women sharing stories of being drugged via injection, has led to nationwide protests to boycott nightclubs, including Greater Manchester.

John Wray, The Venue's owner, said: “Our door personnel tend to spot and check out for things happening, as well as our staff. I don’t think the boycotting will affect our business because people can feel safe here and know that they are being supported by staff.

“It doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but by being aware and assuring people to ask, we can offer the maximum protection. It has always been a concern, but we believe we have been more vigilant.”

Officials at the Student Union at the University of Bolton, say there haven’t been any reported incidents, but it is an important issue.

The union campaigned earlier this year on consent and student safety, with plans to take part in a police sexual violence awareness week next month.

General manager Janet Galligon said: “We want students to feel as safe as possible and to have awareness of looking after themselves. I don’t like telling people to change their behaviour because it’s the ones doing it that have the problem. But we can continue to provide them with knowledge and support.”

Police also responded after several spiking reports in Fallowfield.

Det Insp John Robb said later: “Drink spiking is a horrible experience. But we are starting to see women being targeted in this area and therefore we will be increasing our presence to help protect people and prevent these crimes.”
