People-pleasers take note saying no is good for your mental health
At my workplace, I am always afraid of taking sides openly. I behave like a sort of rolling stone. I want to please everyone, to be polite to everyone. I fail to muster up the courage to call a spade a spade.
But I am upset with this attitude. I canât speak the truth, a bitter one, to a person. I am poor at decision-making, and am always panicked.

Answer:I asked organisational and counselling psychologist Jasmine Sliger about your worries, and she told me that youâre in good company.
âMany people are afraid to speak their mind or even hazard a guess at a basically innocuous question [at work]. Sometimes, these people are known as people-pleasers. This is a personality trait that can cause problems long term.
âIt can arise out of self-esteem because you feel that you donât value your own opinions; insecurity, because you are worried that people wonât like you or are too worried about what people think; and perfectionism because you worry your answer wonât be perfect enough.â
Jasmine says that one of the best ways of overcoming this reticence and need to please others is to âsteer yourself towards authenticityâ.
âAll of us have a set of values that we live by and the more we are authentic about these values, the more self-esteem we will have. Caring too much about what people think can bring you a lot of anger, frustration, anxiety and stress.
âThe best way to shift some of these behaviours is to start with small things. Set boundaries and limits with regard to what you will and will not do.â
Jasmine says these are rules you can establish ahead of time or that you can work out on the spot â" in other words, at the time a colleague puts you in (what youâve previously considered) an uncomfortable position.
âAsk yourself important questions. If someone makes a request of you, ask yourself âDo I want to do this?â âDo I want to spend time on this?â âCan I handle the anxiety or stress it will give me if I say yes?ââ
Jasmine says itâs fine to respond to these internal questions in the positive, but if you do end up saying ânoâ, you shouldnât feel obligated to justify, explain or defend that decision. By doing that, you may encourage co-workers to change your answer.
This brings us to another crucial point. Although this may feel like a problem of your making, the fact is there might be some people you work with who manipulate or take advantage of you. While many â" probably most â" wonât be acting with exploitative intent, itâs important to be wary of those who are abusing your tact, caution and gentle nature for their own ends.
Jasmine also suggests at some point taking a step back from the specific instances where you feel youâre being over-polite or panicking under pressure and considering what you want from work as a whole.
âAt work, you need to set your priorities and set little goals for yourself. You need to consider how you want to grow in your job. What things do you want to learn from your current role? What projects do you want to work on? And, more importantly, what projects are going to bring you joy?â
